Red Baraat’s Bhangra Brass Funk
For decades now, Western musicians have looked to India for inspiration — think the Beatles and their embrace of sitar master Ravi Shankar.
Red Baraat is different. The Brooklyn band is one of a growing number of groups founded by the children of Indian immigrants — a new generation that’s pulling the music in the opposite direction, layering Western influences on an Indian foundation.
Sunny Jain is Red Baraat’s founder, and he says his exuberant brass band actually relies on some very old traditions. Jain joins us to talk more about the band’s latest album, Shruggy Ji.
Red Baraat will be performing at the Royale Nightclub in Boston on Saturday.
