When four jazz majors at New England Conservatory met in a practice room in 2003 for their first band rehearsal, the initial result wasn’t quite what they had hoped. They barely knew each other at the time and even recall sounding “terrible” at first, but an undeniable chemistry kept them coming back for more.

After years of writing, improvising and touring almost non-stop, Lake Street Dive has hit its stride with a jazzy, rootsy, soul-infused sound that is all their own. Their most recent accomplishment is “Fun Machine,” an EP of cover songs.

Lake Street Dive joined Radio Boston in studio earlier this year in April.
