Love Letters: Relationships And Social Media

In a world that now boasts one billion Facebook users, for many it’s more challenging than ever to keep their personal lives, well, personal.

Social media — from Facebook to texting to tweeting — has radically changed the way we establish and maintain relationships. And that includes romantic relationships, which is where this discussion can get really complicated.

A case in point: If you break up with someone in the “real” world, can you still be “friends” on Facebook? And what happens when a friendship on Facebook or Twitter interferes with a personal, real-world relationship?

    There is also a technology solution to this.  You can actually put people in “Acquaintance” and “Close Friend” categories and only have certain posts and photos visible to each category.  An ex can go into the “acquaintance” category.  My Facebook acquaintances cannot see much  in my profile or what’s going on in my life.

    Regardless of the on- or offline distinction, this a situation to be worked out between two people. Most fundamentally, what are the intentions, behaviors, words, interests, desires, security, insecurity, etc., of the parties involved? This isn’t in a domain of on- or offline, but simply managing relationships.
