Capturing The Grand Canyon By Cello Strings

The sheer size of the Grand Canyon can overwhelm the senses. The majestic Arizona park can be up to 18 miles wide in some parts, and one mile deep. So imagine taking the experience of visiting the Grand Canyon, and trying to capture it all with just a single cello.
That’s exactly what Rhonda Rider set out to do earlier this year.
Rider is a cellist, and a faculty member at the Boston Conservatory. In February, she spent one month working as an artist in residence at the Grand Canyon. While she was there, the Jamaica Plain native commissioned 11 artists to write compositions for the cello inspired by the park.
Rider will be performing those works at the Boston Conservatory on Saturday, September 24.
