BMC Layoffs Expose Budget Woes

Layoffs at Boston Medical Center have exposed a major budget crisis there. The hospital — the city’s leading health care facility for needy populations — will eliminate 119 jobs and is projected to lose $175 million this year.

Hi, I’m a resident in Galveston Texas listening to WBUR now via public radio phone app. for my smart phone. As I listen to discussion about BMC layoffs, I’m reminded of the exact same situation in my local town where U.T.M.B.(Univ. of Tx-Medical Branch Galv,TX) had the exact same problem w/underfunding indigent care from state legislature. The state of TX eventually ponied-up, because UTMB provides indigent care for the entire state & is also a teaching hospital/university. I did not expect BMC would have these problems, but they seem to plague many communities.
