How Much Will Your Medical Procedure Cost?

Have you ever tried to figure out in advance how much a medical procedure will cost? Comparing prices could allow you to find the hospital or doctor that will give you the best deal and, in the process, help bring down the overall cost of medical care.

Here in Massachusetts, there’s a law designed to let you do just that. Since October, health insurers have been required to provide their members with estimates of how much certain medical procedures cost.  The quote must include how much you would pay out of pocket based on your deductibles and co-payments. Starting next month, hospitals and doctors will also have to supply prices to patients.

I do not believe that this bill will actually lower healthcare costs. What I LOVE, though, is that it brings to light how unnecessarily complicated insurance companies have made their plans. I believe that as prices come to light, they will go up (especially in primary care). After all, demand more often than not outweighs supply; the providers have the upper hand. I am curious: Is there a penalty if the insurance company makes a mistake with the price quote? I am especially concerned about community hospitals that utilize community providers (not hospitalists). How would the insurance plan know, for example, which provider happens to be on call when your baby is born. That pediatrician may, or may not, be in your plan, even if the hospital is, and that would greatly change your out-of-pocket costs.
