The entrepreneur Bobby Sager has been described as “a big brash guy from Boston – flamboyant, eccentric, inexhaustible world traveler and practical philanthropist.” That description came from the British pop-star Sting, who has managed to capture just about everything about Bobby Sager that’s facilitated his success.

A Malden native, Sager made his fortunes at an investment firm before packing up his life and his family to support various causes around the globe. He’s a believer in “hands-on, eyeball-to-eyeball” philanthropy, but claims that his work is selfish in the sense it has allowed him to truly live. Among these projects was an initiative he started with the Dalai Lama called Science for Monks, which teaches modern science to Buddhist monks.  In the words of the Dalai Lama, “The knowledge of science will be instrumental in the preservation, promotion and introduction of Buddhism to the new generation of Tibetans.”

Sager has now published a coffee-table-sized book on the subject titled Beyond the Robe, which he says follows the monk’s study of science, but is not a science book. Rather, it offers a window into Buddhist life and the potential role of Buddhists in the twenty-first century:

The real story here is what the study of science has revealed about who these remarkable men and women really are and the much bigger role that they seem suited to fill.
