CommonHealth: The Evils Of Indoor Tanning

As winter approaches and the warm sunshine fades, many people embrace another way of maintaining their summer glow: indoor tanning.  That’s especially true here in New England, where it can be particularly gloomy for those long, cold winter months.  But the latest medical research suggests tanning salons are even more hazardous to your health than previously believed.

This was the subject of our a recent post on WBUR’s CommonHealth blog, and Carey Goldberg joins us to explain the statistics and dangers of tanning, and why young people are at the greatest risk.

Guests:

  • Carey Goldberg, co-host of WBUR’s CommonHealth blog
  • Robert Kohl, father of Glenna Kohl, who died of melanoma in 2008

I am so sorry about your loss Robert but, I think this is absolutely absurd we are blaming tanning beds for skin cancer.  The numbers that Carey speaks are really good at fooling people but, they need to realize what the numbers really mean.  There are over 3.5 million cases of skin cancer every year and of that only 170,000 cases reported going into sun beds? And of that, how many of the fair skinned folks would have got skin cancer regardless.  Here is a great article that actually explains those numbers…. http://healthjournalism.org/blog/2010/05/tanning-beds-what-do-the-numbers-really-mean/

In most cases, skin cancer is actually found in most spots that aren’t exposed to the sun as often.  Such as, behind your ears, on the back of your legs, on your scalp, etc.  Another thing that really confuses your facts is people who work indoors have higher skin cancer rates than those who work outdoors.

I have been tanning for many years and the key word is moderation.  For people to completely fear the sun and a tanning bed are really hurting themselves because those are the two best sources for vitamin D.  If you don’t know how important vitamin D is this you’re hurting yourself even more. Â
