Jack Sidell was not considered a traditional banker by those who knew him. He was one of the few bankers in Boston willing to invest in young chefs who wanted to open their own restaurants.

Sidell is credited with helping to launch the careers of celebrity chefs such as Jasper White, Lydia Shire, Barbara Lynch and Todd English. Many chefs say Boston would not be the culinary destination it is today without the passion and financial backing of Sidell, who ran US Trust bank for many years.

Sidell died in 2007, but on Monday night many of Boston’s top chefs are gathering to celebrate the legacy he left on the city’s restaurant community.
