Volunteering in Boston

At this time of year, thoughts turn to helping those less fortunate, and here in New England, we’re particularly generous.  Volunteering goes up in November and December when folks look to help with soup kitchens and food pantries.  While non-profit organizations do everything they can to make use of the extra help, their needs are ever changing.  These days, organizations are increasingly looking for skilled labor, donated “pro bono.”  They also, of course, always need money to help pay for skilled services, and buy supplies.  This week, we look at our region’s culture of giving and volunteering.

I am online looking for volunteer opportunities when I heard your show in the background. Please give a phone number or website to go to for more info. I am unemployed and really want to spend my time helping anyone who could use me.

I went through a 40-hour training and volunteered for a few months this year. It was a great experience.

Three hundred volunteers over the age of 55 serve as literacy tutors in Boston and Revere. WE need more help!

My local yarn store in Gloucester (Coveted Yarn, if anybody asks) has a ‘charity knitting/crochet night’ where we work on any project for any charity. We will also teach people to knit so that they can make a charity project. Our two major efforts are for baby hats for Beverly hospital and helmet liners and gaters to send to the US military. It’s great fun and attended by a diverse age group (20-92 years old). It’s community with a purpose.

Those thinking of volunteering should also realize that volunteering runs the gamut. I give guided architectural and historical walking tours for Boston By Foot, a nonprofit, educational foundation. If you have an interest, there is a volunteer opportunity for you, somewhere! You just need to keep looking.

    Hi,
I was interested in useing a week vacation to do volunteer work in New Orleans this year (I live in Providence). I had a lot of trouble finding organizations that accepted short term volunteers. Can you suggest any organizations to contact?
    Thanks!
